A Fragrance of Worship.
Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.”— John 12:3
Reflection:
This moment in scripture is a powerful picture of extravagant worship and unwavering devotion. Mary’s act of anointing Jesus’ feet with costly perfume demonstrates her deep love and reverence for Him. The pure nard, worth an entire year’s wages, symbolized the sacrifice she was willing to make to honor Christ. She didn’t hold back—she gave Him her best.
What’s even more striking is how Mary wiped His feet with her hair. This was a vulnerable and humble act, showing her willingness to lower herself in order to glorify Him. Her focus was solely on Jesus—she wasn’t concerned about the opinions of others or the cost of her offering. The result? The house was filled with the beautiful fragrance of the perfume, a reflection of Mary’s heart poured out in worship.
As we reflect on Mary’s example, we are reminded of our own calling to worship Jesus wholeheartedly and without reservation. When we give Him our best—whether it’s our time, talents, or resources—the fragrance of our worship fills the space around us, drawing others closer to Him.
Application:
Reflect on what “costly perfume” might look like in your life. Is there an area where God is calling you to sacrifice or give more deeply in worship? Spend time today in prayer and surrender, asking Him to help you offer your best with a willing and joyful heart.
Closing Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for the example of Mary’s extravagant worship. Help me to love You wholeheartedly and to offer my best in every area of my life. Teach me to worship You with humility and devotion, letting the fragrance of my worship fill the spaces I enter. May my life glorify You and draw others closer to Your presence. In Your precious name, Amen.
